2027: Obi, NDC Only Serious Opposition To Tinubu, Says PDP Chieftain

—

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has described the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as the only serious opposition to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an interview on ARISE NEWS monitored by The News Chronicle, Ulasi said the economic challenges facing the country, including inflation and rising food prices, could strengthen the opposition’s chances, adding that Obi appeared to enjoy widespread support among Nigerians.

The PDP chieftain, however, expressed uncertainty over the NDC’s level of organisation and its ability to capitalise on public dissatisfaction with the government.

“There is only one opposition party that is running in this election, and that’s NDC. There is only one serious opposition, which is Peter Obi,” he said.

“How organised they are, I cannot swear. I’m not in NDC.

“Whether he has the support of the majority of Nigerians, I think he does, apparently, because of the serious shortcomings this government has — inflation, food prices. There are a lot of things to exploit. But whether they’re effectively doing it is another question,” Ulasi added.

He also questioned the seriousness of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as an opposition platform ahead of the elections.

On the rotation of presidential power between northern and southern Nigeria, Ulasi argued that fairness should guide political arrangements in the country.

He said it would be morally wrong for another northerner to seek an eight-year presidential tenure immediately after former President Muhammadu Buhari completed his two terms.

“It is not constitutionally wrong, but it’s morally wrong,” he said.

Ulasi added that he had warned former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in 2023 that the political arrangement would not work without a sense of fairness.

His comments come as political parties and opposition figures position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
