From 1992 to 2026: Nigeria’s History of Military Aircrashes

—

For decades, Nigeria’s military skies have carried the weight of a dangerous paradox: aircraft deployed to defend the country have sometimes become scenes of tragedy themselves.

The latest incident came on October 5, 2026, when a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed near Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State while on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos.

The aircraft, with 25 passengers and seven crew members on board, crashed close to a naval base after disappearing from radar at about 9:13 a.m.

The tragedy has now drawn renewed attention to Nigeria’s history of military aviation accidents, some of which claimed the lives of senior military officers, pilots and other personnel.
Here are some of the major military aircraft crashes recorded over the years:

1. September 1992 — C-130 Hercules Crash
One of Nigeria’s deadliest military aviation disasters occurred in September 1992 when a Nigerian Air Force C-130 Hercules crashed shortly after taking off from Lagos.
The crash claimed the lives of 158 people, making it one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.

2. September 1997 — NAF Dornier 228 Crash
Five years later, tragedy struck again when a Nigerian Air Force Dornier 228-212 crashed on September 12, 1997.
The aircraft had 10 people on board, all of whom died in the crash.

3. September 2006 — Dornier 228 Crash in Benue
On September 17, 2006, a Nigerian military Dornier aircraft crashed in Vandekiya, Benue State.
The accident killed several military personnel, including senior officers. Reports put the number of fatalities at 14, with 10 generals among those killed.

4. August 2015 — NAF Dornier Crash in Kaduna
On August 29, 2015, a Nigerian Air Force Dornier 228 crashed in Kaduna.
All seven people on board were killed, including four military officers.
The same year, on October 10, an NAF F-7NI fighter jet also crashed in Kaduna during a training mission, killing one person.

5. July 2017 — Agusta 109 Helicopter Crash
In July 2017, an NAF Agusta 109 Light Utility Helicopter crashed into the Borno River while undertaking a liaison mission.
Despite the dramatic incident, no life was lost.

6. September 2018 — Two F-7NI Jets Collide
On September 28, 2018, two Nigerian Air Force F-7NI fighter aircraft collided around Katampe Hills in Abuja while rehearsing for Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.
One person died in the crash.

7. 2019,  Three Military Aircraft Accidents
Military aviation recorded several incidents in 2019. On January 2, an NAF Mi-35M helicopter crashed near Damasak, Borno State, killing its five-man crew. An RV-6A Air Beetle subsequently crashed near Kaduna in August, killing its pilot, while a training helicopter crashed at the NAF Base in Enugu in November. No life was lost in the Enugu incident.

8. February 2021 — NAF King Air Crash
On February 21, 2021, an NAF Beechcraft King Air 350i crashed shortly after taking off from Abuja while heading towards Minna, Niger State.
The aircraft had been deployed for surveillance operations connected to efforts to secure abducted students and staff.
Seven military personnel died. The NAF later instituted an investigation into the accident.

9. March 2021 — Alpha Jet Disappears
Barely weeks later, an NAF Alpha Jet disappeared from radar during operations in Borno State.
The aircraft was subsequently confirmed to have crashed, although the whereabouts of its two pilots remained unknown.

10. May 2021 — Crash That Killed Army Chief Attahiru
Perhaps the most prominent military aviation tragedy of 2021 occurred on May 21, when an NAF Beechcraft King Air 350 crashed near Kaduna International Airport.

All 11 people on board were killed, including the then Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru.
The accident triggered a joint investigation by the NAF and the Accident Investigation Bureau, with an interim report submitted later that year.

11. July 2021 — Alpha Jet Lost in Zamfara
In July 2021, another NAF Alpha Jet was lost after it was shot down in Zamfara State.
The pilot survived after ejecting from the aircraft.

12. April 2022 — Super Mushshak Crash
On April 19, 2022, an NAF Super Mushshak trainer aircraft crashed at the NAF Base in Kaduna.
The two pilots, Flight Lieutenant Abubakar Muhammed Alkali and Flight Lieutenant Elijah Haruna Karatu, were killed.

13. 2023 — FT-7NI Crash in Makurdi
In July 2023, an NAF FT-7NI trainer aircraft crashed in Makurdi, Benue State.
The pilots survived the incident.

14. August 2023 — MI-171 Crash in Niger
One month later, an NAF MI-171 helicopter crashed near Chukuba in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State while carrying out a casualty evacuation mission.
The crash became one of the deadliest military aviation accidents of the period, with 11 deaths recorded in the review by The Guardian.

15. December 2023 — MI-35P Crash in Port Harcourt
On December 1, 2023, an NAF MI-35P helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from the NAF Base in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The five crew members survived, although they sustained minor injuries.

16. 2025 — Alpha Jet Emergency
In December 2025, two NAF Alpha Jet pilots safely ejected after their aircraft developed an emergency shortly after taking off from NAF Base Kainji during a post-inspection functional check flight.
Both pilots survived.

17. 2026 — CH-4B Loss
Before the Ondo tragedy, Nigeria’s military also lost a CH-4B unmanned aircraft during a surveillance operation in Niger State in January 2026. No human life was lost.

18. October 2026 — ATR-42 Crash in Ondo
The latest and most devastating incident occurred on October 5, 2026.
An NAF ATR-42, identified by authorities as military aircraft NGR 931, disappeared from radar while travelling from Benin City to Lagos before crashing near the Naval Base at Igbokoda, Ondo State.

The aircraft was carrying 32 people — 25 passengers and seven crew members. President Bola Tinubu subsequently declared three days of national mourning and ordered flags flown at half-mast nationwide.

The crash has once again placed the safety of Nigeria’s military aviation fleet under scrutiny.

According to a review by The Guardian, the Ondo incident became the 16th military aircraft crash or aircraft loss recorded in its decade-long review, with 38 confirmed deaths before the Ondo incident and two additional pilots presumed dead following the 2021 Alpha Jet disappearance.

For a military whose aircraft are constantly deployed for combat, surveillance, evacuation, training and transport missions, the record underscores the enormous risks faced by Nigerian military personnel every time they take to the skies.

And with investigations now ordered into the Ondo crash, attention will once again turn to a familiar question after every military aviation tragedy: what went wrong, and what can be done to prevent the next crash?
