From Awo’s Rigorous Cabinet to Pocket Politics — Why Yoruba That Produced Soyinka, Ransome-Kutis, Adesina, Sowore Without Drug/Certificate Scandal Must Reclaim Decency.
Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (Rtd) did not just warn Yorubas. He validated 60 years of Nigeria’s wound — divided nation, shared consequence — and unknowingly made case for beauty of unity through 5Cs.
Listen again to his most profound line, beyond headline: “I remember the so-called Igbo coup. Till today, the Igbos have been ostracised from governance of this country. Now, Tinubu is doing the same thing. That is why I say whether he wins or loses, we are done for.”
In that quote lies entire history of entrapment factory Prof Adekunle Oloyede described — Former VC Medical Engineering — we manufacture ZERO not HEROES, we plant mango expecting orange.
1966 coup was tagged Igbo coup. Sixty years later, Igbo ostracised. That is consequence of divided nation. Label one group, punish generations. Now Olawunmi says Tinubu’s style risks same label for Yoruba — whether he wins or loses 2027, “Yorubas can never have mouth to speak anywhere again.” Whether 2031 or beyond, South-West may face political winter.
That is what divided nation does. It weaponises ethnicity, then bequeaths debt to children.
GEN’S VALIDATION: CONSCIENCE OVER ETHNICITY
But OLAWUNMI’S also gave us antidote. He said: “If you start behaving in a way that jeopardises the interest of the people that voted you in, I don’t care whether you are my brother, I will talk to you.” And: “Nigerians should not defend poor governance merely because a political leader belongs to their ethnic group.”
That is Conscience — first C. That is Miniature Map speaking. I am Yoruba by Ijebu, Igbo by birth in Enugu, Idoma by Northern mother. I cannot defend failure because he is my brother. I must speak because he is my brother.
OLAWUNMI’S, Yoruba commodore, is criticising Yoruba president not because he hates Yoruba, but because he loves Yoruba enough to warn: pocket politics will cost us power for decades. That is Character — third C — staying right even when tribe says stay silent.
Beauty of unity is not pretence that tribe does not exist. Beauty of unity is courage to tell your own tribe truth.
AWOLOWO’S 1987 WARNING: OFFICE IS NOT FOR PLEASURE
At twilight of his death in 1987, Obafemi Awolowo told Professor Moses Akinola Makinde, Nigerian philosopher:
“As Premier of Western Region I chose my ministers on merit and because of their education, standard and discipline. Every minister or adviser and top civil servant had to do his homework properly before bringing anything to cabinet meeting or any other important meeting where it will be subjected to rigorous debate. Where there are grey areas, expert opinion would be sought for purpose of objectivity. As Premier, I had to follow all procedures vigorously, and meticulously, always relating our decisions and actions to public good… It is because of this service to public that I often maintained that office of President or Prime Minister is not for pleasure. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, it looks as if office of President, Minister, Adviser is for pleasure, like dining and wining and carousing with women of easy virtue both at home and at abroad.”
Awolowo died May 9, 1987 — 39 years ago — yet his words dominate national discourse as Nigeria marks 66th independence. He saw what politicians would become. Office for pleasure, not public good. Dining, wining, carousing — while nation cannot produce pencils, imports toothpicks, dies of typhoid, malaria, cholera in 4IR era.
Awolowo’s standard was merit, education, discipline, homework, rigorous debate, expert opinion, procedure, public good. That is 5Cs before 5Cs — Conscience, Competence, Character, Courage, Capacity.
THE DECENCY PARADOX: YORUBA THAT PRODUCED HEROES NOW HOSTS LOUSY MINORITY
Here is paradox that Olawunmi’s clarion call exposes, and why Miniature Map must answer.
Yoruba tribe that produced Obafemi Awolowo — rigorous, disciplined, no scandal — also produced:
Prof OLIKOYE RAMSOME-KUTI — renowned paediatrician, Health Minister, integrity.
WOLE SOYINKA — Nobel Laureate, conscience of nation, no drug, no certificate forgery.
General OLUSEGUN OBASANJO — former Head of State, no international crime record.
General IPOOLA ALANI AKINRINADE — decorated, disciplined.
Dr BEKO RAMSOME-KUTI — human rights martyr, medical doctor, integrity.
AKINWUNMI ADESINA — AfDB President, global reputation, no controversy.
OLUFELA RAMSOME-KUTI — Fela — music legend, political conscience, though controversial lifestyle, never drug trafficking or certificate forgery in international record.
OMOYELE SOWORE — activist, Sahara founder, consistently clean background.
All these Yoruba greats — antecedents well known — without international crime, drug issues, certificate forgery, identity issues, or controversial background. Yet today, so-called lousy minority of Yoruba political gladiators, not conscious of Awolowo attributes enumerated, parade opposite — identity questions, certificate questions, pleasure-seeking.
How did Yoruba move from Awolowo’s cabinet where every memo faced rigorous debate to cabinet where memo is for pocket? From merit to mediocrity? From public good to dining and wining?
That is entrapment factory. That is what Olawunmi says will cost Yorubas for decades — whether Tinubu wins or loses.
FROM SELF-DETERMINATION TO 5Cs NATION
Olawunmi concluded: “The only thing he can do for us as Yoruba now is to facilitate for us to have our self-determination.” He cited failed 2014 National Conference and Oronsaye Report, called for genuine revolution from public dissatisfaction.
I respect his pain, but differ in prescription, with Miniature Map authority. Self-determination without 5Cs is transplanting same pocket politics into smaller flag.
If Yoruba nation emerges tomorrow with same Miracle Centre where bought A1 beats honest F9, same refurbishing old cargoes, same recycling elite children educated abroad while local youths idle, same ALSCON and Ajaokuta dead — 24,000 hectares, N4 trillion, N29 billion salaries, 40 years — then Yoruba nation will also need self-determination from itself in 20 years.
Division without 5Cs is hallucination — Prof Nnah’s word. Plan without execution is hallucination. Prof Nnah upgraded 3Cs to 5Cs: Conscience, Competence, Character, Courage, Capacity. Without courage to demand POWER like Ghana/Kenya at UNGA 81, not POCKET, and capacity to execute BVAS/IReV flawless 2027, move from TI 154/180 score 24/100 to 4IR Top 10, any nation — Nigeria or Yoruba — will beg for what it already owns.
BEAUTY OF UNITY: MINIATURE MAP AS PROOF
Prof Au Nnoyelum, DVC Unizik Awka, said last week: “I read your articles daily. I wish elite are listening.” Unizik is Igbo heartland. DVC reading Yoruba-born-Enugu-Idoma-mother writer daily is beauty of unity. When Former VC Oloyede gives blanket go-ahead, when Law scholar Nnah upgrades model, when Commodore Olawunmi warns Yoruba while quoting Igbo ostracism, we see Nigeria’s faculties still united even if politics divided.
We own same problems — insecurity, poverty, corruption. We own same resources — oil, gas, gold, lithium, 200m minds. Divided, we beg pocket separately and lose collectively. United with 5Cs and Awolowo standard, we demand power together and build together.
Olawunmi warned: “Whether he wins this election… it is a loss to the Yorubas.” Awolowo warned: office is not for pleasure. Miniature Map answers: Whether Tinubu wins or loses, if we replace ethnicity with 5Cs and return to Awo’s merit, rigorous debate, public good — Yoruba redeems itself, Nigeria wins because competence wins, not tribe.
