A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of desperately seeking to retain power because its members fear the consequences of losing control of government.
Speaking on Symfoni TV Monitored by The News Chronicle, Galadima alleged that the APC’s desperation could push its members to “do anything under the sun” to remain in power, claiming they are concerned that their actions in office could be revisited if they lose power.
“The desperation with which the APC is going, they can do anything under the sun to come back to power, because they know what it entails if they lose power; what they have done to people will visit them,” he said.
Galadima also commented on the travails of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, saying he believes the former governor is facing consequences for some of his past actions.
“El-Rufai himself is paying for what he has done to other people, I believe so. But that does not mean that the issue that led to his detention is politically motivated. Why did they arrest him?” he asked.
He recalled warning El-Rufai about the manner in which he conducted himself while in office, saying he had advised the former governor to be cautious or risk facing legal consequences.
According to Galadima, he personally approached Rabiu Kwankwaso and appealed to him to persuade El-Rufai not to return to Nigeria from Egypt after the former governor was allegedly indicted.
“Tinubu and his people are ingrates as far as El-Rufai is concerned. I’m not the best friend of El-Rufai.
“In fact, I advised him that he should be careful of the way he carries himself, that he either goes on exile or they will jail him.
“I went and met Kwankwaso and told Kwankwaso that he should beg El-Rufai not to come back. These people do not mean well to him.”
El-Rufai was reportedly arrested and detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on February 18, 2026, after returning to Nigeria from Egypt.
He subsequently faced additional charges and periods of detention involving the ICPC and the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations including corruption, contract fraud, cybercrime and phone-tapping involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
On May 18, the Abuja Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, reportedly granted El-Rufai bail in the sum of N100 million in the case filed by the DSS.
The former governor, however, remains in custody, according to the report, after reportedly being unable to meet the conditions attached to the bail.
