Happy 66th Independence to Nigerians home and abroad — We have always been one.
Yesterday I argued we have always been one undivided people until politicians weaponized ethnicity. Today I ask deeper question: Why did brilliant people lead a united people into division?
Because a person can be brilliant and still be profoundly unintelligent about life.
We have paraded brilliance for 66 years. PhDs, First Class, Harvard, Oxford, London School of Economics — in every cabinet since 1960. Yet Nigeria remains underdeveloped. Why? Because academic brilliance makes us knowledgeable, analytical, accomplished — but it does not teach wisdom to know what is worth pursuing, how much is enough, and what abilities and resources ought to serve.
Africa is underdeveloped because its elites are brilliant but not wise — selfish, self-centered, egoistic, myopic. They know how to acquire, not how to serve. How to become powerful, not how to become useful.
There is a level of intelligence beyond brilliance — higher, superior. It is the intelligence to choose honesty when dishonesty is profitable; humility when pride is possible; selflessness when selfishness is easier; service when personal gain is available.
That higher intelligence is what I call 3Cs — CONSCIENCE, COMPETENCE, CHARACTER — and it is the core of MIND RESTRUCTURING ADVOCACY.

History gives us models of intelligence beyond brilliance:
Prof Wole Soyinka — Yoruba — Conscience — Itu Egwu Chineke: Most brilliant playwright Africa ever produced, Nobel 1986, yet chose 22 months solitary prison for trying to stop civil war rather than comfortable silence. Brilliance writes; conscience bleeds.
Prof Chinua Achebe — Igbo — Character — Agwa Oma: Most brilliant storyteller, Things Fall Apart translated 50 languages, yet rejected national honours twice, saying country fixed with falsehood cannot progress. Brilliance acquires honour; character rejects false honour.
Dr Bala Usman — Hausa/Fulani — Competence — Igba Mbo + Ikpachapu Aku Anya: Gyanawa Fulani aristocrat, ABU radical historian, most brilliant of his generation, yet said: “There is no Northern interest, only Nigerian interest manipulated by elite.” Brilliance defends class; competence dismantles it for people.
Three men, three tribes, one wisdom: What we have becomes most meaningful when it becomes useful to others.
So what is ultimate evidence of intelligence? Not how much one can acquire. Not how powerful one can become. Not how much more one can take when one already has enough. But ability to master appetite, recognize obligations to others, devote advantages to purposes larger than oneself.
2027 is test of Intelligence Beyond Brilliance. BVAS, IReV, real-time flawless election will separate brilliant riggers from wise servers. Brilliant rigs election with stomach infrastructure; wise serves country with 3Cs. Successful countries did not choose most brilliant — they chose most wise, most selfless.
I celebrate our beloved Nigeria at 66 and compatriots who, like some of us, have seen that the good of one’s own people is truest gold one can find.
We were never divided, we were made divided by brilliant but unwise elites. We will be reunited by wise leadership.
