An early morning gas explosion caused panic at Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday after a vehicle reportedly crashed into a gas retail outlet, triggering a fire that spread to nearby businesses.
The incident occurred at about 6:15 a.m., sending residents, traders and motorists scrambling for safety as thick smoke and flames engulfed parts of the busy commercial area.
At least nine shops were affected by the fire, while the vehicle involved was completely burnt.
The driver and a young child were rescued from the scene. The injured driver was subsequently taken to a medical facility for treatment. His current condition was not immediately known.
The fire also damaged a nearby police traffic post and part of a drainage channel.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigeria Police, responded to the scene.
The agencies worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the commercial area.

The incident caused significant traffic disruption around Liberty Junction as emergency personnel battled the flames and cleared the affected area.
No deaths were reported in the accounts reviewed. Normal activities gradually resumed after the fire was brought under control.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and the subsequent gas explosion.
