A memorial cenotaph has been unveiled at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja in honour of Nigerian military personnel who lost their lives in the 1992 Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft crash.
The monument was unveiled on Saturday, September 26, 2026, by the Green Heroes Foundation, an organisation made up of retired military personnel, to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the tragedy.
The Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft crashed on September 26, 1992, shortly after taking off from Lagos, killing military personnel on board.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Chairman of the Green Heroes Foundation, retired Major-General Shehu Yusuf, said the initiative was conceived after members of the organisation visited the National Military Cemetery and discovered that there was no monument specifically commemorating the victims of the crash.
Yusuf said the cenotaph was established to preserve the memory of the fallen personnel and ensure that their sacrifices are not forgotten.
He also disclosed that the foundation had continued to engage with families affected by the crash, as well as supporting and reaching out to other military veterans.
The unveiling formed part of activities marking the anniversary of the tragedy, which remains one of the deadliest incidents in the history of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The foundation said the memorial would serve as a lasting reminder of the service and sacrifice of the military personnel who died in the crash.
