2027: Ex-IGP Adamu Emerges SDP Flagbearer, Vows to Rewrite Nasarawa’s Political Story

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nasarawa State has formally affirmed former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu (Rtd), as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Adamu’s candidacy was affirmed on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Lafia through a unanimous voice vote witnessed by a massive turnout of party members, delegates and supporters from across the state.

In a statement signed by High Chief Otaru Douglas, Director of Media and Strategic Communications of the Adamu Campaign Organisation, the SDP said the exercise had put an end to what it described as “endless speculations, rumours and mischievous machinations” allegedly sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to distract the party.

The campaign organisation said the overwhelming turnout was a clear demonstration that the SDP remained “united, focused and ready” to change the governance narrative in Nasarawa State.

“The people have rejected politics of intimidation and inducement and have chosen competence, experience, integrity and proven leadership,” the statement said.

The SDP also took a swipe at the APC and its state chairman over what it described as “loquacious and indignant remarks” in recent weeks.

It added that following Adamu’s “overwhelming affirmation,” the APC should begin preparing its handover notes ahead of the 2027 election.

Douglas commended the party’s executives, delegates, women and youth leaders for what he described as their resistance to “intense pressure, blackmail and monetary inducements” ahead of the affirmation.

He described Adamu as a symbol of security, order, inclusion and purposeful governance, urging party members to return to their respective units and wards to intensify mobilisation ahead of the election.

“The door of the SDP remains open to all men and women of goodwill who desire genuine change,” the statement added.
