Some customers of OPay, a leading mobile money operator (MMO), have expressed concern over a viral social media message alleging that the company would shut down operations from September 1.
Some customers who spoke with Newsmen in Abuja on Monday said the rumour caused panic, prompting them to transfer portions of their funds to other bank accounts.
Ifeanyi Udodi, an OPay customer and Point-of-Sale (PoS) operator, said he received the information from a fellow operator and immediately moved part of his funds to another account.
Udodi said that although OPay had debunked the claim, he would wait for some time before transferring the money back to his OPay account.

Another customer, Halimatu Idris, a student, said she contacted a staff member of the company and was assured that the information was false.
Idris urged OPay to sustain its prompt service delivery and strengthen communication with customers to build greater trust.
“OPay is fast and reliable, but they should engage more with their customers, especially face-to-face, to build trust,” she said.
Similarly, a customer, Agnes Idu, said that although the amount of money in her account was insignificant, the thought of a bank or financial institution shutting down was unsettling for any customer.

However, OPay dismissed the viral message, describing it as false.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the company assured customers that it remained operational.
“We are here, and we are going nowhere. True OPay users know how to identify our official communications.
“Take a closer look at the viral post and you will spot the red flags. Always verify before you share. Filter the noise,” the company said.
OPay urged customers to rely on its verified communication channels and avoid spreading unverified information.
