Nigeria Targets $12 Billion Investment in $7 Trillion Global Halal Economy

Nigeria is targeting more than $12 billion in investment as the Federal Government moves to secure a stronger position in the rapidly expanding global halal economy valued at about $7 trillion.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said the country must move beyond consuming halal products and begin capturing more value through production, processing, exports and job creation.

Speaking in Lagos, Shettima said Nigeria has the population, agricultural resources, manufacturing base and access to the African Continental Free Trade Area needed to compete for a larger share of the market.

The News Chronicle reports that the Nigeria Halal Economy Strategy Implementation Committee, inaugurated in March 2026, has organized its implementation plan into 13 delivery clusters, with four major work streams already activated.

The government is also working on a national halal mark, accreditation, and verification platform, as well as partnerships with international development institutions.

Stakeholders said Nigeria could unlock significant economic opportunities by improving local processing and certification as well as branding and access to international markets.

ICCD Secretary General Yousef Hassan Khalawi specifically urged Nigeria to process more of its shea butter locally rather than export raw materials.

The government said the private sector will remain central to turning the halal strategy into investment, exports and jobs.
