Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming that he urged Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general elections.
Obi described the report as false and misleading, insisting that he has never advocated such a position.
In a statement made available to The News Chronicle, the former Anambra State governor said his respect for Nigeria’s security forces, particularly personnel of the Nigerian Army, remains unwavering, stressing that he has consistently called for improved welfare, adequate equipment, motivation and protection for those defending the country.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” Obi said.
He explained that his concerns about the welfare and safety of soldiers were heightened following the loss of military personnel to insurgents in circumstances he said raised questions about delayed rescue efforts.
“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” he said.
Obi further pledged that, if elected president, the welfare, safety, resources and dignity of members of the armed forces would be among his administration’s top priorities.
“Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern. Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” he said.
According to him, his administration would ensure that Nigerian soldiers are adequately equipped and protected while carrying out their duties.
“Under my leadership, scenarios where our servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril will be eradicated,” Obi added.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the report attributing the controversial statement to him, maintaining that he remains committed to presenting what he described as a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
“The realisation of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed POssible,” he said.
