JUST IN: Shettima Takes Two-Week Break from Office

Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave approved by President Bola Tinubu, marking his first official leave since assuming office on May 29, 2023.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.

According to the statement, Shettima will use the leave period for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued service to the nation.

Nkwocha said the break would provide the Vice President with an opportunity to review the administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for future responsibilities as the Federal Government intensifies the implementation of its Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement noted that since assuming office in May 2023, Shettima has remained actively involved in coordinating and supervising several key government initiatives, particularly in the areas of economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.

It also highlighted his role as Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC), which comprises the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior public officials responsible for deliberating on economic policies and issues affecting citizens’ welfare.

The Vice President has also represented President Tinubu at several major international and regional engagements.

According to the statement, Shettima represented the President at the G20 and AU-EU summits last November, among other high-level multilateral meetings, while Tinubu remained in Nigeria to oversee responses to the kidnapping incidents in Papiri, Niger State, and Eruku, Kwara State.

Nkwocha said Shettima remains committed to the principles of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration, as well as supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria.

The Vice President is expected to resume his official duties at the end of the two-week leave on or around August 20, 2026.
