Senator Pushes Bill to Legalise Native Doctors, Cites Rural Healthcare Needs

The senator representing Kebbi South Senatorial District, Garba Maidoki, has proposed a bill seeking legal recognition and regulation of native doctors in Nigeria, arguing that traditional medicine remains the primary source of healthcare for millions of rural residents.

Speaking during deliberations on the proposed legislation, Maidoki said the bill would provide a legal framework for native doctors to register and practise under government supervision.

According to him, many people living in rural communities depend largely on traditional herbs and indigenous healing methods due to limited access to conventional healthcare.

Most rural dwellers rely mainly on traditional herbs, and it is time they have the right to register and practise under supervision and monitoring,” the lawmaker said.

He argued that formally recognising traditional practitioners would help Nigeria harness its indigenous medical knowledge while reducing dependence on imported medicines.

This will holistically reduce our dependence on foreign medication and the importation of the same. It will also allow us to rely on herbs and medications provided by our native doctors,” Maidoki stated.

Making a case for the relevance of traditional spiritual practices, the senator remarked during the debate that native doctors play a unique role in many African communities.

Addressing Senate President Godswill Akpabio, he said: “If your ancestors want to talk to you, you need a native doctor to intercede.”

The proposed bill seeks to establish a regulated system for the registration and practice of native doctors, with the aim of promoting accountability while preserving Nigeria’s traditional medical heritage.
