ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike in Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara Over Unmet 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto Zone, has warned that universities in Kebbi, Katsina, and Zamfara states could face another round of industrial action if their governments fail to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement and settle outstanding welfare entitlements owed to academic staff.

The warning was issued on Wednesday by the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Sokoto Zone, Prof. Abubakar Sabo, during a press conference at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

Prof. Sabo said the union had engaged the affected state governments through dialogue for several months but expressed disappointment that commitments made under the agreement had yet to be fulfilled.

He warned that ASUU would not remain silent while agreements were being ignored, stressing that the continued delay in implementing the pact was pushing the university system towards another crisis.

According to him, lecturers in the affected states are still owed salary adjustments, unpaid allowances, and promotion arrears, a situation he said threatens industrial harmony and the smooth operation of public universities.

The ASUU leader, however, commended the Sokoto State Government for fully implementing the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement, describing the move as a demonstration of responsible leadership and commitment to quality higher education.

He noted that Sokoto’s compliance had strengthened trust between the government and university lecturers while helping to maintain industrial peace.

Prof. Sabo urged the governments of Kebbi, Katsina, and Zamfara states to emulate Sokoto by implementing all provisions of the agreement without further delay to safeguard the future of public universities and avert another strike.
