Nigerian streamer and comedian Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, known as Carter Efe, has responded to the controversy surrounding his purported Babcock University certificate, joking that the institution would have to pay him before he appears there.
Carter Efe made the comment on Monday night during a livestream in which he joined fellow content creators Kolu and Destiny to sell akara on the streets. Addressing the matter briefly during the broadcast, he said: “Babcock, I hear say Babcock una dey look for me. Una no go see me. Before una go see me, una go pay N100,000 for ticket, and we are coming to Babcock soon.”
The remarks come days after Carter Efe shared what he described as his Babcock University Biochemistry degree certificate, claiming he graduated with “First Class Upper.” He posted the document after social media users questioned his educational background, stating he studied at the Biochemistry Computer Club at the university.
The post drew immediate scrutiny, as “First Class Upper” is not a recognised degree classification in Nigeria. Babcock University issued a public notice on Monday, stating it does not recognise any such classification and that its highest academic honour is First Class Honours.
The university said it does not issue honorary certificates for undergraduate academic performance and described the circulating document as “false, unauthorised, and does not emanate from the University.” It further warned that anyone found producing, circulating, or using forged academic credentials could face investigation and prosecution.
Despite the university’s statement, Carter Efe continued the livestream unbothered, making light of the situation alongside his co-hosts.
Reactions online have largely focused on the content creator’s tone rather than the authenticity of the certificate. Some users accused him of giving Babcock University free publicity through the controversy, while others linked his response to earlier comments by singer Ycee about an “Olodo Uprising,” with one user describing the moment as evidence of an “oponu uprising.”
Several comments criticised Carter Efe for showing no remorse, with one user writing, “Bro is not even apologetic.” Others dismissed the entire episode as comedic, focusing on his N100,000 demand rather than the original certificate claim.
As of Tuesday, neither Babcock University nor Carter Efe has issued further statements on the matter.
