The Oodua Youth Coalition (OYC) has called for stronger consumer protection measures in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, citing growing concerns over data usage patterns and subscription billing practices.
The group’s Vice President (Administration), Mr. Olatunji Adejuwon, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ibadan.
Adejuwon, who is also the immediate past Assistant Secretary-General of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), urged regulatory agencies to intensify oversight of telecommunications companies and pay-TV service providers to ensure greater accountability and fairness to consumers.
He stressed the need for increased transparency in data billing systems and subscription models, noting that many consumers have raised concerns about how their data is consumed and billed.
“Consumers have repeatedly expressed concerns about data consumption rates and the billing structures adopted by some service providers,” he said.
The OYC leader called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other relevant regulatory bodies to strengthen consumer protection mechanisms, improve complaint-resolution processes, and enforce compliance with industry regulations.
He also urged youth organizations, labor unions, and civil society groups to champion policies the protect consumers’ rights and interests across the country.
Adejuwon further challenged telecommunications operators to enhance service delivery, improve network quality and provide a better customer experience.
According to him, increased competition within the industry would ultimately benefit consumers through improved services, greater innovation and more affordable pricing.
The youth leader also called on the government to implement policies that support indigenous enterprises and stimulate economic growth.
“Supporting local businesses and strengthening consumer protection frameworks are essential to building a more resilient and inclusive economy,” he said.
He reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to advocating policies that promote accountability, transparency and consumer rights in service delivery.
