Naira Slides to Four-Week Low as Stronger Dollar Pressures Emerging Markets

At the official currency exchange market, the Nigerian naira continued its recent drop, closing at N1,373 to the dollar on June 23, 2026—its lowest level in four weeks.

The News Chronicle reports that local currency has come under rising pressure in recent trading sessions as the United States The dollar keeps weighing down emerging market economies all around.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s data revealed the naira dropped N17 in eight trading days from N1,356 per dollar reported in mid-June. The most recent exchange rate has the currency around the N1,374 per dollar value seen in late May, still among the poorest official market performances in the last months.

Market watchers mostly link the trend to a stronger dollar atmosphere driven by predictions that the U.S. Federal Reserve would keep rigorous monetary policies for longer. Investors have been motivated by the improvement to prefer dollar-denominated assets, therefore strengthening pressure on the currencies of developing nations.

Despite a marked increase in Nigeria’s external reserves, which lately surpassed $51 billion, their highest level since 2009, the decline comes. Although greater reserves and continuing foreign currency changes help to keep the market stable, merchants are keeping a careful watch on world economic events that might affect the course of the naira in the next few weeks.
