Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo was buried on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Aziukwukwa in Ujari Village, Arochukwu, Abia State.
The actor died on May 11, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos. His family revealed the cause was complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer. He was 40 years old.
His wife, Anwuli Ekubo, attended the burial after appearing publicly for the first time at his Service of Songs. The couple had married privately, and her identity only became widely known after his death.
At the graveside, Anwuli prayed over her husband’s remains, supported by Ekubo’s sister. She then kissed him for the last time before taking part in the traditional rite of placing soil on the grave. Reports indicate she is currently pregnant.
A video of the moment was shared widely online. Reactions on social media ranged from sympathy to concern over the timing of the public attention on her. One X user, @kirainsync, wrote: “I hate that you people are posting this woman. The family wanted to keep her private.”
Separately, a Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie, criticized actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli over the release of her film, The First Lady, on her YouTube channel shortly after Ekubo’s burial. Oboli had said the film marked the beginning of her friendship with Ekubo and pledged to donate the proceeds to his family.
In a Facebook post, Ossai said: “I’m disappointed in Omoni Oboli for using Alexx Ekubo’s burial to promote her movie and to cash out.” He added: “Grief is not content. A funeral is not a launch event.”
Oboli, in a video posted on her social media pages, had said: “Today we finally laid our bestie, late Alexx Ekubo, to rest. In honor of his memory, I will be releasing The First Lady, a movie that started this whole friendship 11–12 years ago.”
Ekubo’s burial was attended by several Nollywood figures including Obi Cubana, IK Ogbonna, Michael Godson, EMoney, Kcee, Stan Nze, Ini Edo, and Nancy Isime.
