A Call to Peace and Reconciliation!

Shikrot Mpwi – Sunday Synopsis

Fr. Justine John DYIKUK

Dear friends in Christ,

On the Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday, Year A (24 May 2026), I bring you greetings and God’s blessings!

Theme: A Call to Peace and Reconciliation!

Introduction

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Pentecost Sunday is a significant day in the life of the Church, marking the birthday of the Catholic Church. The word “Pentecost,” meaning “fiftieth” in Greek, refers to the second major feast in the Jewish calendar, observed seven weeks after Passover. Initially a day of thanksgiving for the wheat harvest, it also commemorates the giving of the law to Moses on Mount Sinai.

All Jews, both at home and in the diaspora, were expected to attend this feast, making it the perfect occasion for the Holy Spirit’s descent. This universal outpouring, which began with the Spirit moving over the waters at Creation (cf. Genesis 1:2) and emboldened the prophets (cf. 1 Kings 22:22 & 1 Peter 1:11), fell upon the apostles in the Upper Room along with a diverse crowd from the Mediterranean, reversing the confusion of Babel (cf. Genesis 11:9).

Review of the Readings

The first reading from Acts 2:1-11 describes the miraculous speaking in tongues on Pentecost. A mighty wind filled the upper room as the Holy Spirit descended as tongues of fire upon the apostles, enabling them to proclaim the mighty works of God to people from various regions, who heard them in their own languages.

In the second reading from 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13, St. Paul underscores that no one can declare “Jesus is Lord” without the Holy Spirit. He notes the diversity of gifts given by the same Lord and emphasises that, although we are many, we are one body in Christ, baptised by one Spirit.

The Gospel of John 20:19-23 recounts Jesus’ appearance to the fearful apostles, offering them peace and showing them his hands and side. He then commissions them, saying, “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you,” and breathes on them, instructing them to receive the Holy Spirit, empowering them to forgive or retain sins.

Takeaway Lessons

1. In a world badly fragmented by hatred, war, conflicts, and tensions, the first and second readings remind us that we were all made to drink of one Spirit, inviting us to speak in the one tongue of love through actively engaging in charitable works.

2. Pentecost assures that though many we may be, we are united in diversity, calling us to live out the Church’s catholicity (universality) to the full, based on being created in the image and likeness of God, not race or colour.

3. Being the formal beginning of the Church, Pentecost Sunday reminds us to proudly celebrate the Church’s birthday and live out its values.

4. Catholics are challenged to live up to their confirmation commitments by being soldiers of Christ who are ready to face the battles of life and defend the Church in the face of trials, temptations, and tribulations.

5. In a society that is often combustible along religious, ethnic, and political fault-lines, Jesus’ “Peace be with you” is an imperative for peace and reconciliation in our families and communities.

Conclusion

We are called to celebrate our mother, the Catholic Church, one of the world’s oldest institutions, enduring for over 2,000 years. As Easter concludes, may this ordinary time bring blessings for a new farming season in most parts of the world, marked by the green liturgical colour. May Pentecost Sunday renew the earth and inspire us to testify to our faith through all challenges. Grounded in Christ’s promises, may the Holy Spirit bring peace and reconciliation among nations. Amen. Wishing you a joyous celebration!
