Kano Killings: Amnesty International Demands Probe Into Political Thuggery

—

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing of five people by suspected armed political thugs in Kano on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, describing the incident as a disturbing escalation of political violence in the state.

In a statement obtained by The News Chronicle on Wednesday, the organization called on authorities in Nigeria to launch an immediate and thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible, including alleged sponsors, are identified and brought to justice.

According to Amnesty International, disturbing videos circulating online show armed individuals moving in groups, chasing victims who were later brutally attacked and killed.

Other footage reportedly captured victims lying in pools of blood in their final moments. The attackers were allegedly seen wearing clothing associated with the ruling political party while chanting violent slogans.

The rights group said it has received credible reports indicating that supporters of certain politicians have been targeting perceived political opponents in a wave of coordinated attacks.

It added that investigations are ongoing into allegations linking some prominent political figures and government officials in Kano to the sponsorship of these armed groups.

Amnesty International warned that the incident reflects a growing and dangerous pattern of political thuggery in Kano, noting that such actions threaten the fundamental right to life and undermine democratic participation.

The organization urged Nigerian authorities, political leaders, and parties to uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of lives and property before, during, and after political activities. It also stressed the need to safeguard citizens’ rights to freedom of movement and association.

The group further cautioned that rising political violence is creating a climate of fear, discouraging citizens from actively engaging in political processes and weakening democratic institutions in the region.
