Michael Jackson Film Opens Strong in Nigeria With N123m Debut

—

The new biopic Michael has made an impressive entry into Nigerian cinemas, pulling in N123.2 million within its first three days and signaling strong audience interest in the story of pop legend Michael Jackson.

Box office figures show the film opened with N111.6 million before climbing over the weekend, despite not being screened by Filmhouse Group, one of the region’s biggest exhibitors. The performance highlights the growing demand for big-budget international titles in the local market.

The News Chronicle reported that the film’s early success is being driven by nostalgia, musical appeal, and curiosity about its portrayal of Jackson’s life, drawing large crowds across major cinemas.

Globally, the film is also enjoying a massive run, generating over 217 million dollars during its opening weekend and setting a new benchmark for music biopics. It has already surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody as the biggest global debut in the genre.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, the film traces Jackson’s journey from his early days to global superstardom. While critics have offered mixed reactions, audiences continue to drive its strong commercial momentum.

With its early numbers, the film is quickly establishing itself as one of the standout cinema releases of 2026.
