Fire Razes 17 Homes in Dikwa IDP Camp, Displaces Dozens in Borno

A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed at least 17 households at Kamcheji Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026, causing widespread panic and significant loss of property among camp residents.
Sources said the affected victims are mostly from Mallumri Afuye Ward. The fire, which spread rapidly through the camp, razed makeshift shelters and consumed personal belongings, leaving many families without shelter or means of livelihood.
The camp, currently under the leadership of Bulama Bukar Jugudum, witnessed desperate efforts by residents to contain the blaze, but the intensity of the fire made it difficult to control.
No casualties have been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report, but the scale of destruction has left dozens of displaced persons in urgent need of assistance.
The incident highlights the continued vulnerability of IDP camps in the North-East, where overcrowding and limited firefighting resources increase the risk of such disasters.
Affected families are calling for immediate support, including emergency shelter, food supplies, clothing, and medical aid, as they struggle to recover from the tragedy.
Authorities and humanitarian organizations are yet to issue an official response as of press time.
