Tension gripped Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday after angry youths and women attacked soldiers and set a military checkpoint ablaze.
The incident occurred in Rapung Kassa during the funeral of a local resident, Gyang Nuhu Choji, who was reportedly killed on April 16 by unidentified gunmen suspected by residents to be Fulani militia.
According to sources, the protesters stormed the checkpoint, destroying structures and equipment stationed in the area. Witnesses said the demonstrators accused security operatives of failing to protect the community from recurring attacks.
The unrest also led to the temporary blockade of major access roads in the area, disrupting movement before normalcy was later restored following intervention by community leaders and assurances from security authorities.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
