Tinubu Congratulates Benin’s President-Elect Wadagni, Pledges Stronger Bilateral Ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his election as President of the Republic of Benin, describing his victory as a reflection of the confidence reposed in him by the Beninese people.

Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s Minister of Finance, secured an overwhelming majority of votes in the presidential election held on April 12, 2026.

In a letter personally signed and released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the peaceful conduct of the election and the democratic spirit displayed by the people of the West African nation.

The Nigerian leader noted that Wadagni’s emergence marks a significant milestone in Benin’s political journey, adding that the outcome of the election reflects the trust and confidence citizens have in his leadership and record of service.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your election as the President of the Republic of Benin,” Tinubu said.

He further praised the resilience of the Beninese people, highlighting their commitment to maintaining peace and upholding democratic values throughout the electoral process.

President Tinubu also emphasized the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the Benin Republic, describing the ties between both countries as rooted in shared history, culture, and cooperation.

“Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation,” he said, expressing optimism about deepening collaboration between both countries.

The President stated that he looks forward to working closely with Wadagni’s administration to strengthen bilateral relations, enhance regional security, and promote economic growth within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union.

As Wadagni prepares to assume office, Tinubu wished him wisdom, strength, and success in steering the affairs of his country, assuring him of Nigeria’s support and cooperation.

The congratulatory message underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering regional stability and strengthening partnerships across West Africa.
