CAN Urges Peaceful Coexistence in Taraba, Condemns Southern Violence

Christians across Taraba State and other residents have been urged to embrace peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, tolerance, and unity regardless of religious or ethnic differences.

The call was made by the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Peter Awoshiri, in his Easter message to Christians in the state.

Awoshiri stressed that diversity should serve as a strength rather than a source of division.

“Our diversity should never be a source of division or conflict, but rather a strength that enriches our collective existence. We must learn to live together in harmony, recognizing the dignity of every human life as created in the image of God,” he said.

He expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence in parts of the state, particularly in Takum and Donga Local Government Areas of Southern Taraba, condemning the killings and destruction of property.

“The continuous shedding of innocent blood is both tragic and unacceptable. It is a direct contradiction to the will of God, who values every human life and calls us to live in peace with one another,” he stated.

The cleric warned that no meaningful development could occur in an atmosphere of fear and instability, calling for an end to all forms of aggression and retaliation.

“Dialogue, understanding, and justice must prevail over conflict and violence,” he added.

Awoshiri commended the efforts of the government, security agencies, and local vigilante groups for their sacrifices in restoring peace, but urged them to adopt more proactive and sustained strategies to end the crisis.

“Their courage and dedication are not unnoticed. However, we respectfully urge that more proactive, strategic, and sustained measures be implemented to decisively end the bloodshed and ensure lasting peace,” he said.

He also appealed to individuals, faith-based organisations, corporate bodies, and well-meaning Nigerians to support those displaced by the violence.

“The Internally Displaced Persons are in urgent need of assistance. Let us come together to provide food, medicine, clothing, shelter materials, bedding, and other essential supplies,” he said.

The CAN chairman sympathised with victims of the attacks, including those injured and families who lost loved ones, offering prayers for healing and comfort.

“Words may not be sufficient to express the depth of our condolences, but we stand with you in prayer and solidarity,” he said.

Awoshiri, however, expressed hope that the Easter season would mark a turning point for the state.

“Even in the face of these trials, Easter reminds us that hope must never be lost. Just as Christ rose from the dead, bringing new life and renewed hope to the world, Taraba State shall rise above its challenges,” he said.

He prayed for peace, unity, and progress in the state, urging residents to see the season as an opportunity for reconciliation, healing, and transformation.
