What We Say on Social Media Matters More Than We Think

In light of a recent viral incident where a young man publicly stated he could “sacrifice his parents,” it is important to look at this matter beyond the jokes and memes.

From a legal perspective, such a statement can reasonably be interpreted as an imminent threat to life.

Under constitutional and criminal law principles, every citizen has the right to life and security.

When a person makes public threats—especially against close family members—it creates reasonable fear and danger.

In this context, the father was within his rights in law to report the matter and seek protection.

Preventing harm is always better than reacting after damage has been done.

So what the legal lessons in this story?

* Words are powerful.

* Social media is a public space.

* What we post can have legal, social, and personal consequences.

* Freedom of expression does not include freedom to threaten lives.

As professionals and responsible citizens, we must be mindful of what we say online.

One careless statement can destroy reputations, relationships, and even futures.
