Tinubu Charges Nigerians to Embrace Peace, Unity as Lent, Ramadan Begin Simultaneously

—

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for renewed unity, compassion, and national reflection as Christians and Muslims begin the sacred seasons of Lent and Ramadan, which this year coincide on the same day in a rare convergence.

In a statement made available to The News Chronicle on Wednesday, February 18 the President described the coincidence as a powerful reminder of the shared values that bind Nigerians across faiths, noting that both observances emphasize sacrifice, devotion, and spiritual renewal under God.

Tinubu explained that Lent, observed by Christians, is marked by fasting, abstinence, and penitence in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s suffering and sacrifice for humanity, while Ramadan, one of Islam’s five pillars, calls Muslims to fasting, deep reflection, charity, and total submission to the will of Almighty God.

The President urged citizens to use the period to strengthen good neighbourliness, foster peace and stability, and offer prayers for the nation’s security and progress.

He encouraged Nigerians to embody the moral teachings of their respective faiths through service to God and humanity, expressing hope that the lessons and blessings of the twin sacred seasons would endure beyond the observance period.
