Ramadan: Kano State Govt Orders Shutdown of Entertainment Centres

The Kano State Censorship Board has directed the immediate closure of all entertainment centres across Kano ahead of the Ramadan fasting period, in a move authorities say is aimed at preserving a calm and morally conducive atmosphere during the holy month.

The directive, announced by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sulaiman, affects facilities commonly known as gala houses as well as Disc Jockey (DJ) operators under the board’s regulatory jurisdiction.

According to the statement, the order takes effect from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, and will remain in force until the end of Ramadan.

All such venues will remain closed throughout the holy month,” Sulaiman said, noting that the measure is intended to allow Muslim faithful observe the fast “without distractions.”

The board added that all entertainment activities under its supervision will remain suspended for the duration, and that a reopening date, particularly ahead of Eid celebrations, will be announced later.

Authorities warned operators to comply fully, stressing that enforcement teams would be deployed statewide to ensure adherence.

“Any defiance of this order will attract appropriate sanctions,” Sulaiman cautioned.

Amid mixed reactions from residents, the board clarified that the restriction does not apply to event centres used for weddings, conferences, or political gatherings.

A director at the agency, Usman Dankwano, explained that only venues strictly classified as entertainment outlets are covered by the directive.

“Places meant purely for entertainment, like gala houses and similar joints under the board’s jurisdiction, are affected,” Dankwano said, adding that event centres are outside the agency’s regulatory authority.

The board maintained that the decision aligns with its mandate to regulate entertainment activities and promote social order during religious observances.
