Kano Govt Breaks Silence on File Freeze, Says Governance Still on Track

The Kano State Government has pushed back against swirling claims that a recent order by Governor Abba Yusuf has brought government business to a grinding halt, insisting that the narrative is a storm in a teacup. The directive, which asked Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to temporarily suspend the forwarding of files to the Governor’s office, has been widely misread, officials say.

In a statement released on Saturday in Kano, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Ibrahim Umar, dismissed the allegations as a gross distortion of facts. “The government describes the claim as incorrect and misleading. The directive was a responsible administrative and fiscal control measure aimed at preventing unauthorised expenditures and ensuring compliance with the Appropriation Law. Essential services in security, healthcare, education, and sanitation remain operational,” he said.

Umar explained that the decision was taken as the state’s Appropriation Law for the outgoing fiscal year was running out, while deliberations on the new budget were ongoing. He assured residents that the pause was merely a temporary administrative checkpoint, adding that once transitional reviews are wrapped up, fresh directives would be issued to smoothly steer the next phase of executive activities.
