Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes Crosses ₦2bn, Sets New Nollywood Box Office Record

Funke Akindele’s latest film, Behind The Scenes, has crossed ₦2 billion at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time.

The film has earned ₦2,103,039,706 since its release in December 2025, according to figures released on Sunday by FilmOne Entertainment, the movie’s distributor. The company confirmed that the film is the first Nollywood production to surpass ₦2 billion in box office revenue.

In a statement shared on its official Instagram page, FilmOne described the achievement as unprecedented, noting that Behind The Scenes is now the highest-grossing Nollywood film across Africa, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Behind The Scenes has officially broken records, hitting over ₦2 billion at the box office and becoming the first Nollywood film to reach this milestone,” the distributor said.

FilmOne also stated that the success places Akindele as the number-one filmmaker at the African box office for three consecutive years, adding that she is now the highest-grossing filmmaker, writer, director and producer in West Africa, based on cumulative box office returns.

Funke Akindele expressed gratitude to God and her supporters in a post on her verified Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts, she described the achievement as part of a larger journey.

“Records are milestones, not the mission. From A Tribe Called Judah grossing ₦1 billion to Behind The Scenes crossing ₦2 billion and still counting, this is God in motion,” she wrote. “The lesson remains unchanged: serve the story, respect the audience, refine the craft, and let the work earn its applause.”

Earlier in its cinema run, Behind The Scenes recorded ₦512 million within 12 days, making it the fastest Nollywood film to cross ₦500 million. The film later rose to ₦1.77 billion, leading the box office for several consecutive weekends before exceeding ₦2 billion in January.

The film’s performance came during a competitive December cinema season, which was marked by complaints from some producers over alleged limited screening slots and uneven promotion. Despite these concerns, Behind The Scenes maintained strong attendance across major cinemas in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Accra, extending its run through the holiday period and into the new year.

Behind The Scenes is a drama centred on Aderonke “Ronky-Fella” Faniran, a real estate entrepreneur whose commitment to helping others begins to affect her personal life. The film explores themes of family pressure, emotional responsibility and the personal cost of success.

With this release, Akindele now has three films that have crossed ₦1 billion. Her earlier titles, including Everybody Loves Jenifa (₦1.88 billion), Omo Ghetto: The SagaBattle on Buka Street and A Tribe Called Judah, remain among Nigeria’s highest-grossing films.
