Governor Abba Yusuf’s Defection to APC Postponed

The much-anticipated defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been postponed.
Sources close to the governor disclosed that Yusuf had concluded plans to officially announce his defection on Monday, with arrangements reportedly made for him to be the first to register under the APC’s newly introduced online membership registration in Kano State.
However, the planned defection was put on hold just hours before the scheduled date. According to insiders, the postponement is linked to the governor’s intention to first hold consultations with key APC stakeholders in the state, including former Kano State Governor and APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; and other party leaders.
Another source revealed that Governor Yusuf personally requested more time in order to persuade additional members of the Kano State House of Assembly and the National Assembly to defect alongside him, a move seen as strategic to strengthen his position within the APC.
As of the time of filing this report, no official new date has been announced for the defection. However, political rumours suggest that the governor may formally join the APC on January 12, 2026, pending the outcome of ongoing consultations.
