On Monday, December 22, 2025, award-winning singer Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade made a grand return to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he studied Performing Arts.
He arrived on campus by helicopter and was formally received by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, alongside senior officials, including Dr. Oluwatoyin Ogundeji of the Theatre Arts department.
At the OAU Amphitheatre, Asake appeared before a large gathering of students, performing traditional drumming and prostrating in line with Yoruba custom. He was accompanied by his mother and entertainer Yhemolee, adding a personal note to the visit.
Reacting on social media, Asake’s mentor and record executive Olamide described the moment as “too real,” a comment that was widely shared by fans.
During the weekend, a concert by the Afrobeats singer Asake at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi turned deadly on Saturday, December 20, 2025, after a crowd-control failure triggered a deadly stampede that killed at least three people and injured dozens of others, according to early police statements and eyewitness accounts.
The incident occurred before the concert fully began, as thousands of fans waited to enter the stadium for Asake’s Mr Money African Tour.
Witnesses said ticket-holders were held outside the venue for hours in heavy rain, with organisers directing the crowd through a single narrow entry point that lacked proper barriers and clear lanes.
According to accounts from event staff and people at the scene, security personnel halted entry for 30 to 45 minutes without adequate communication.
Tensions rose as the crowd pressed forward. When an outer gate was eventually breached, fans surged toward an inner barrier near the stadium tunnel, where several people were crushed against closed gates.
A woman who collapsed during the crush was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. Other injured victims were taken to nearby health facilities with injuries including fractures and breathing difficulties.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and the final casualty figure has not yet been confirmed.
Public safety experts and commentators have renewed concerns about crowd management at major events in Kenya.
Nyayo National Stadium has previously been linked to a fatal stampede during a football match in 2010, when poorly controlled access points led to multiple deaths.
Asake has not been accused of causing the incident.
