Firewood Heist Lands 22-Year-Old in Court

A 22-year-old woman was on Thursday hauled before a Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, over an alleged firewood-and-charcoal raid that prosecutors say went on for months.

We gathered that the defendant, Tawa Lukman, whose address was not provided, is facing charges linked to stealing.

She pleaded not guilty, setting the stage for a legal battle.

Prosecuting counsel, Insp. Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that Lukman allegedly carried out the offence between July 4 and Nov. 23 at Bode Market, Ibadan.

According to him, the defendant made away with 62 bags of charcoal valued at N62,700, firewood worth N543,600, 12 big charcoal pots valued at N30,000, and 11 small pots put at N22,000.

Ayeni further alleged that the haul included 152 packs of big-size charcoal wrapped in large nylon bags valued at N76,000, as well as 178 pieces of charcoal packed in small nylon bags worth N35,600. The items, he said, belong to Mrs. Ajoke Salawu.

The prosecutor added that the alleged offence runs foul of section 390 (9) of the Criminal Law of Oyo State 2000.

Ruling on the matter, the court president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two reliable sureties in like sum. She ruled that the sureties must be blood relations of the defendant and must each present a valid Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) verification receipt.

Until the bail conditions are fully met, the court ordered that Lukman be remanded at the Agodi correctional centre. The case was adjourned to Jan. 15, 2026, for hearing.
