Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, says the worst days of the Boko Haram insurgency are now behind the state, even though there has been a recent rise in attacks.
He made this statement on Wednesday during a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Shuaibu Waidi, in Maiduguri.
Governor Zulum explained that although there have been fresh attacks on communities and security personnel, the situation is still far better than the peak of the crisis years ago.
He said the security challenges today are less severe compared to the intense violence the state once suffered.
He urged the people of Borno State to continue supporting the military and other security agencies by giving useful information that can help stop attacks and maintain peace.
“Yes, we have seen several attacks on our communities and security forces, but the worst is over. We will continue to work together and provide intelligence to our security forces to end this madness,” Zulum said.
He added that while any attack is painful, the overall situation is improving. According to him, the state is moving toward lasting peace, and the government is committed to sustaining that progress.
Governor Zulum also sympathized with the Nigerian Army over recent setbacks and praised the courage of soldiers fighting in the frontline. He described them as heroes who risk their lives for the country.
“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, we stand firmly with the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Armed Forces. We do not take their sacrifices for granted,” he said.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi, thanked Governor Zulum for his continuous support. He assured that the Army headquarters will continue to provide the necessary logistics and resources needed by troops in the region.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the Acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, and the Special Adviser on Security, Brigadier General Abdullaho Ishaq (Rtd).
