The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 601 officers across Borno State to ensure safer roads during the Ember months, a period known for increased travel and traffic.
The corps also launched its 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign against distracted driving, which has been identified as a major cause of road accidents in Nigeria.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Musa Usman Secretariat Complex in Maiduguri, the Borno Sector Commander, CC Usman A. Muhammad, highlighted this year’s theme: “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”
He described distracted driving as a preventable problem that continues to cause deaths, injuries, and emotional pain for many families.
According to him, distractions such as using mobile phones, eating, talking to passengers, and grooming while driving contribute to many accidents nationwide.
Muhammad explained that human error remains the main cause of road crashes, especially during the Ember months from September to December when travel and traffic usually increase.
To reduce these risks, the FRSC has stationed personnel at major traffic points and accident-prone areas. The corps has also deployed patrol vehicles, three ambulances, and two tow trucks for quick emergency responses.
Free vehicle checks will be carried out in government offices to ensure roadworthiness, while motor parks will be closely monitored.
The commander urged drivers, transport unions, and the public to support the FRSC’s safety efforts, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in preventing accidents.
He also praised the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, for his reforms, and Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for improving the state’s road infrastructure through new roads, flyovers, and rail projects.
Muhammad advised motorists to drive carefully during the festive season, reminding them that the so-called “Ember month curse” is a myth.
“Speed thrills but kills. Stay focused, avoid distractions, and drive safely,” he warned.
