Ini Edo Loses Rights to Netflix Series ‘Shanty Town’ in Legal Battle with Filmmaker Chinenye Nworah

—

Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost the rights to the popular Netflix series “Shanty Town” to filmmaker Chinenye Nworah.

Earlier in January 2024, Ini Edo and her company, Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP), filed a legal case against Nworah and her production company, Giant Creative Media Limited (GCM). Ini Edo claimed ownership of the trademarks and copyrights for “Shanty Town.”

However, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Trademark Registry ruled in favor of Chinenye Nworah and GCM. They dismissed Ini Edo’s claims, stating that her petition was baseless.

In a separate decision, the NCC also rejected Ini Edo’s request to cancel two copyright certificates that were issued to Nworah for the literary and audiovisual works related to “Shanty Town.”

Nworah’s lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, said that this victory underscores the importance of protecting creative works and ensuring that artists receive fair compensation.
