Anambra South Senatorial Aspirants Begin Secret Consultations, as INEC plans By-Elections to Replace Late Senator Ubah

—

Underground consultations have begun across communities of Anambra South Senatorial District, following the recent plans announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct by-elections to fill the vacant seats of UBA in 2024.

The by-elections will take place after the upcoming Edo and Ondo governorship elections, scheduled for September 21 and November 16, 2024, respectively.

The 10th Assembly has lost four members since its inauguration in June 2023.

They include Isa Dogonyaro of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who represented Babura/Garki Federal Constituency, Jigawa State in the House of Representatives; Ekene Abubakar Adams of the Labour Party, who represented Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State;  Musiliudeen Akinremi, an APC lawmaker, who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Oyo State; and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the APC, who represented Anambra South Senatorial Constituency.

According to Rotimi Oyekanmi, who is the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the by-elections will likely be held after the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.

This, however, is not the first time INEC has conducted by-elections this year.

On February 3, 2024, by-elections were held in nine constituencies to fill seats left vacant by the demise or resignation of members elected during the 2023 general elections.

TNC correspondent in Anambra can confirm that secret political meetings have commenced in some communities in Anambra South, by politicians seeking to succeed the late Senator Ubah, less than two weeks after his sudden demise.

A source in one of the communities confirmed that a politician had invited them for a meeting, where he unveiled strategies on how they will deepen their campaigns at the grassroots.

According to the source, while they regret the loss of Senator Ubah, the senatorial zone cannot afford to lose any of its accruements, hence the need for preparations.

The late Senator Ubah was serving a second term as Senator representing Anambra South in the National Assembly, before his unfortunate death.

He was elected into the senate on the platform of the YPP and was re-elected on the same platform, but later defected to the APC, and was mobilizing seriously to contest for the 2025 Governorship Election in Anambra.
