NiMet Warns of Increased Rainfall and Potential Flooding in Nigeria Throughout July

—

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a warning on Wednesday about increased rainfall activity across the country during July, particularly focusing on the northern and north-central states.

NiMet, the authoritative source for weather and climate updates in Nigeria, predicts that the rain will “increase both in frequency and intensity” during this period. Southern cities should also expect a mix of intermittent and continuous rains.

In addition to increased rainfall, citizens in Nigeria’s southern states can expect cooler temperatures, both day and night due to the cloudy atmosphere.

NiMet advises the public to dress warmly to avoid cold-related illnesses during this period.

The agency also forecasted a ‘Dry Spell’ and the ‘Little Dry Season (LDS)’—a mid-summer drought characterized by unusually long dry periods—towards the end of July.

This dry spell is expected to primarily affect the central and northern states, resulting in reduced rainfall in these regions.

Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, has already experienced higher-than-predicted rainfall levels, leading to flash floods.

The city’s drainage issues have exacerbated the situation. On June 3, heavy rain started in the early hours and continued throughout the day, leaving many motorists and residents stranded in stagnant water, with cars submerged in some areas.

To prevent further flash flooding, NiMet advises the public to ensure that all drainage systems are cleared and properly maintained.
