—

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, recently paid a sympathy visit to former Super Eagles winger Tijiani Babangida, on Thursday.
Babangida, 50, who also played for Ajax football club in Holland, was involved in a tragic motor accident last month that resulted in serious personal injuries and the loss of close family members.
In the accident, Babangida broke his right leg. Tragically, his son and his younger brother, Ibrahim Babangida, who was part of Nigeria’s 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning team, lost their lives. Tijiani’s wife was also seriously injured in the accident.
During his visit, Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, expressed his condolences and support.
He said, “They made the nation proud, they made us happy with their talents, and in times like this, they deserve our sympathy and attention. I came to commiserate with him for the wound, for the lost ones, for the trauma and to show him that he is not forgotten.”
Tijiani Babangida, who is the President of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria, shared with Obi that he has been receiving support from former colleagues and Ajax football club in Holland.
Emmanuel Babayero, the Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medalist and General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria, was also present during Obi’s visit.
Babayero thanked Obi for his kind gesture, noting that such support is essential to encourage and uplift the ex-player during this difficult time. He praised Obi for his efforts to make society better and for his achievements.
