CEHRAWS Condemns Attack on Soldiers that Resulted in 3 Deaths in Aba

A civil rights group, the Centre for Human Rights Advocacy and Wholesome Society (CEHRAWS) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Army and the family of the soldier who tragically lost his life in Aba, Abia State, on Friday, May 17, 2024.

Two soldiers attached to the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, Abia State, and a civilian suspected to be a Keke operator were reportedly killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen who attacked their outpost at the Aba main motor park along Asa road.

The incident which occurred at about 8 pm, is coming months after a military outpost at Ngwa road by No.1 Port Harcourt road, Aba, was attacked, with no life lost.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Director of CEHRAWS, Chuka Okoye condemned the attack on security operatives, particularly the incident that resulted in the death of the brave soldier at the Milverton area/Aba Main Park, orchestrated by criminal elements/unknown gunmen.

Okoye hailed the state governor, Dr Alex Otti for wading into the matter immediately to forestall any further breakdown of law and order.

He said; “We appreciate the swift and decisive intervention by the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, who promptly visited the scene and coordinated with security forces to ensure stability.

“We also commend the efforts of the Commander of the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, for his timely actions which prevented a potential reprisal attack.

“Their restraint and non-kinetic approach were crucial in maintaining peace and order in a highly volatile situation.

“CEHRAWS acknowledges the professionalism demonstrated by the Nigerian Army in handling this tragic event.”

The group urged the citizens of Aba to cooperate fully with the security operatives by providing any useful information that could lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators.

According to him, “It is through collective effort and community support that we can ensure justice and prevent future occurrences.

“We pray for the continued application of non-kinetic strategies in addressing security challenges across Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast and Abia State.

“Such approaches are essential in rebuilding public trust in the government and fostering a realistic and enduring civil-military relationship.

“We believe that through cooperation and respect, we can achieve a safer and more secure environment for all.

“Once again, our deepest sympathies go out to the Nigerian Army and the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the fallen soldier rest in peace, and may we all work together to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
