During the weekly press conference held in Abuja, Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, the ECOWAS Commissioner on Human Development and Social Affairs, shed light on the organization’s concerted efforts to address humanitarian crises plaguing West African nations.
Prof. Sarr underscored the pivotal role of the department, which operates within a comprehensive mandate spanning humanitarian concerns, cultural preservation, educational advancement, and scientific endeavors.
Detailing the scope of ECOWAS’s humanitarian initiatives, Prof. Sarr disclosed the allocation of significant financial resources toward alleviating the plight of internally displaced persons, refugees, asylum seekers, and the communities hosting them across all 15 member states. Specifically, in 2024, ECOWAS earmarked a substantial sum of 9 million dollars for this purpose.
Additionally, within Nigeria, a further $1 million was allocated to facilitate stabilization efforts, targeting victims of terrorism, displaced individuals, the injured, and community rehabilitation endeavors aimed at bolstering resilience in the face of adversity.
Notably, in its concerted efforts to combat terrorism, ECOWAS has mobilized a dedicated fund totaling 25 million dollars, with a specific focus on Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Out of this fund, a significant portion amounting to 4 million dollars has been designated for humanitarian interventions, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by extremist activities.
Beyond reactive measures, Prof. Sarr emphasized ECOWAS’s proactive stance on disaster prevention, highlighting the implementation of a robust disaster reduction strategy.
Central to this strategy is the utilization of sophisticated tools such as the Observation, Monitoring, and Alert Center, which enables ECOWAS to closely monitor populations displaced by conflicts and natural disasters, anticipate emerging challenges, and effectively manage crisis situations to mitigate their impact on vulnerable communities.
Moreover, Prof. Sarr underscored the organization’s steadfast commitment to nurturing the youth demographic across member states, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping the future trajectory of the region.
By investing in youth development initiatives, ECOWAS seeks to empower the next generation with the requisite skills, resources, and opportunities needed to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development and prosperity of West Africa.
