How Bread Sparked the French Revolution

—

In the years leading up to the French Revolution, France faced bread shortages. Poor harvests and a growing population strained resources. When bread, a crucial staple food, became scarce, its price increased drastically.

This price increase severely impacted the poorest citizens, the Third Estate. With a large portion of their income going to bread, any increase meant hunger and hardship.

Eventually, bread became a symbol of the vast inequality between the social classes. The wealthy could still afford bread, while the poor struggled. This disparity fueled resentment towards the privileged elite.

The bread shortages sparked unrest. A prime example is the Flour War of 1775, a series of riots over rising grain prices. This incident foreshadowed the larger revolution. a series of riots that took place in April and May of 1775. These riots were sparked by an increase in grain prices, which led to a corresponding increase in bread prices.

The Flour War was not the sole cause of the French Revolution, but it was a significant event that showed the deep-seated economic and social issues that would eventually lead to the revolution.

The Flour War was caused by a combination of factors, including poor weather and harvests, the withholding of public grain supplies by police, and the rising cost of grain. These factors led to a widespread shortage of bread, which was a major source of food for the French population.

In response to the shortage, riots broke out in the northern, eastern, and western parts of the Kingdom of France. These riots were eventually suppressed by the deployment of military troops and the imposition of wheat price controls by Turgot, Louis XVI’s Controller-General of Finances.

The Flour War was part of a broader social and political crisis during the Ancien Régime, and recent analyses tend to treat it not only as a revolt caused by hunger but also as a prelude to the French Revolution.

So, while bread wasn’t the only factor, it was a key ingredient in the simmering pot of discontent that eventually boiled over into the French Revolution.

Air Force Destroys Boko Haram Logistics Hub, Neutralises Fighters in Precision Strike in Borno

The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI has intensified its offensive against terrorist groups in Nigeria's North-East, destroying a major terrorist enclave and logistics hub during a precision airstrike in Borno State. According to Intelligence sources the operation was carried out at about 2:40 p.m. on Friday, July 10, targeting Yaganari, a notorious terrorist stronghold within the Gezuwa general area. According to the sources, the location had recently become a regrouping point where insurgents were consolidating fighters and logistics for planned attacks. The strike followed credible intelligence indicating heightened terrorist activities in the area. Military intelligence reportedly conducted persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions to verify the information before authorising the engagement. A source said surveillance assets confirmed the presence of multiple terrorist structures, logistics facilities and visible movement of insurgents within the target area. Following confirmation, Air Component aircraft carried out a series of precision strikes, accurately engaging the designated targets in successive attack runs. The operation reportedly destroyed the identified terrorist structures, obliterated logistics hubs and neutralised several insurgents operating within the enclave. Military sources described the mission as a significant blow to terrorist operations in the North-East, noting that the destruction of the logistics infrastructure would further weaken the insurgents' ability to coordinate attacks and sustain their activities. The operation underscores the military's continued reliance on intelligence-driven precision airstrikes to dismantle terrorist command centres, safe havens and supply networks, while supporting ongoing ground operations by troops of Operation HADIN KAI. Security sources added that a battle damage assessment is ongoing to determine the full extent of the impact of the strike, while intensified aerial surveillance has been deployed over the area to prevent surviving terrorists from regrouping.
