Former champion football champion turned actor O.J. Simpson has passed away at 76 years old.
Born Orenthal James Simpson in San Francisco, he achieved fame first as a college football player, winning the Heisman Trophy while at USC. He later set records as a professional football player for the San Francisco 49ers and the Buffalo Bills.
In addition to his football career, Simpson ventured into acting, appearing in films such as “The Klansman,” “The Cassandra Crossing,” and “The Towering Inferno,” as well as the miniseries “Roots.” He gained further popularity starring in three “Naked Gun” movies and the comedy “Back to the Beach.”
However, Simpson’s life became overshadowed by the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, who was found murdered outside her Brentwood condo on June 12, 1994. Simpson, who had a history of domestic violence with Nicole, became a prime suspect in the killings. The subsequent trial became a media spectacle, drawing immense public attention.
Despite the highly publicized trial, Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995. However, he was found liable for wrongful death and battery in a civil suit brought by the victims’ families in 1997, leading to a substantial financial penalty.
In a separate legal incident, Simpson served almost nine years in prison for robbery, kidnapping, and other charges related to a Las Vegas sports memorabilia scheme. He was released on parole in 2017.
