Protest in Kano Local Government Area Erupts Amidst Governorship Controversy

—

On Saturday, an extensive assemblage, purportedly comprising adherents of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), congregated on the thoroughfares to articulate their dissatisfaction in connection with the ongoing governorship disagreement in Kano State.

The disagreement involves Abba Yusuf, the current governor, and Nasir Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The protesters, numbering in the thousands, were adamant about their desire for the apex court to deliver a fair judgment that would affirm the mandate given by the people of Kano to Yusuf.

The focal point of their demonstration was in the Rogo local government area of the state.

The protest commenced with a prayer session, where participants sought divine intervention in the ongoing political turmoil.

Following the prayers, they took to the streets, brandishing placards bearing various inscriptions conveying their grievances.

Unfortunately, the peaceful demonstration took an unfortunate turn as chaos erupted, leading to the reported setting ablaze of a vehicle on the streets.

This escalation prompted a response from law enforcement, and the police subsequently issued a ban on any political gatherings or protests within and outside the metropolis.

The backdrop of this unrest dates back to December 21, 2023, when the Supreme Court reserved judgment in the appeal lodged by Yusuf.

The appeal contested the decisions of both the Court of Appeal and the State Election Petitions Tribunal, which had previously ousted Yusuf from office and declared Gawuna as the rightful winner.

A five-member panel, presided over by Justice John Okoro, was responsible for rendering the final judgment.

The resolution of this legal dispute is anxiously awaited by those directly involved and the broader public.

The legal battle holds significant interest for both the parties directly affected and the general public.
