Bauchi Governor strongly condemns the attacks on Chief Judge of the state

—

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed worry about rumors and negative comments surrounding the leadership style of Chief Judge Justice Rabi Talatu Umar.

During the 2023/2024 Legal Year ceremony in Bauchi, the governor urged an end to mudslinging against the judge and emphasized the importance of respect in the judiciary.

“I sympathize with her for the rumors and name-calling prevailing in the judiciary. It’s unbecoming because we look up to you for values,” stated Governor Mohammed, highlighting the need to appreciate Justice Umar’s leadership.

He acknowledged significant improvements under her leadership and commended the collaboration between the executive and judiciary for its positive impact on development. The governor pledged ongoing support for the judiciary under Justice Umar’s guidance to ensure swift justice dispensation.

In her address, Chief Judge Justice Rabi Talatu Umar revealed facing unwarranted criticism, particularly regarding religious considerations in judicial appointments.

She clarified the fair and legal process of appointing judges, emphasizing the need for civilized ways to address grievances instead of resorting to misleading media tactics.

The Chief Judge stressed the merit-based selection process and highlighted the opportunities for both the official and private bar to aspire to elevated ranks.

She called for commendation rather than condemnation for those dedicated to their careers.

“There is naturally no possibility that all the 44 High Court applicants will be shortlisted for a vacancy of five.

“Those in the private and official bar have the opportunity and advantage of aspiring also to the elevated rank of Senor Advocate of Nigeria.

“Unlike the magistrate who chose to remain on the line for decades aspiring to be elevated to the higher bench. This calls for commendation and not condemnation”.

Justice Umar cautioned against using inappropriate means to express grievances, urging adherence to lawful channels.

The emphasis throughout was on fostering a respectful and collaborative environment within the judiciary for the benefit of justice and the public.
