Meet Liverpool’s current longest-serving player, who is yet to score a professional goal

This may have surfaced as a huge surprise to many football enthusiasts, especially Liverpool fans, that Liverpool’s longest and key player has never netted a goal despite playing actively for the club in every season since he joined the Reds.

Joe Gomez, 26, since the departure of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who spent 12 years at the club, holds the record for the longest-serving player currently at the club. James Milner, who also arrived at Liverpool the same year (2015) as Joe Gomez, left the club this summer to join Brighton and Hove Albion.

Henderson, Joe, and Milner were the only three players German coach Jürgen Klopp inherited and retained from his successor Brendan Rodgers, who stayed until 2023 after he joined the club in 2015.

The English defender, after making his switch from Charlton Athletic in 2015, went through the club academy level, where he was capped nine times before being handed his senior debut in October 2016.
At Charlton Athletic, Joe commenced his career in 2007 to 2014 and was promoted to the senior team before joining Liverpool.

Despite playing notably for Charlton Athletic and Liverpool with 221 caps of around 15,613 minutes, Joe Gomez has never scored a goal since starting his senior career in 2014.

His longevity can be attributed to his ability to play any role in the defence line – rendering a significant backup for either Trent Alexander Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil Van Dijk, or Ibrahima Konate. Joe was a key player in Liverpool’s 2019-20 title-winning season, partnering with Virgil Van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence after Cameroonian centre Joel Matip suffered a long-term injury spell.

Conversely, Joe has kept one of the neatest records as a defender, in all the games he featured, Gomez has never been sent off, and one of Liverpool’s players who have been booked the fewest times (33) on yellow cards.

With Liverpool, Joe is a complete player who has won every trophy at his disposal except for the Carling Cup. His archive consists of the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club, World Cup, FA Cup, and FA Community Shield.

In 2017, Gomez earned his first senior call-up by the England senior national team where he was capped having featured for U16, U17, U19, and U21.
