Collins Dictionary has chosen AI as its word of the year. It defined it as an “abbreviation for artificial intelligence: the modeling of human mental functions by computer programs.”
According to a statement from the UK-based dictionary publisher, AI which is a significant technological revolution, has undergone swift progress, remaining a widely discussed topic throughout 2023.
The publisher also stated that the reason Collins Dictionary chose ‘AI‘ as its Word of the Year for 2023 was the tendency of computers to become proficient in the domain of language, leading to extensive discussions, examinations, and anticipations.
Notably, the first Global AI Summit on AI Safety is being held in the United Kingdom on Wednesday and hosted by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at Bletchley Park.
Other words that were considered for Collins’ word of the year included “de-influencing,” used when a social media influencer advises followers to avoid certain products;
“nepo baby,” which refers to someone whose famous parents helped their career;
“canon event,” which is an experience that shapes one’s character;
and “ultra-processed foods,” which refers to foods made using complex methods with low nutritional value.
