Truckload of COVID-19 palliatives vandalized in Anambra

A truck conveying COVID-19 palliatives donated to Anambra State Government by the Coalition against COVID19 (CACOVID), was on Saturday attacked by some irate youths in Awka, Anambra State Capital and the items taken away.
Earlier on Saturday, a video of a warehouse at Agu-Awka where the items were allegedly stored had surfaced online and at about 9:30am, youths had besieged the location, seeking to gain entrance into the facility.
Security men had prevented the irate youths from accessing the warehouse as efforts were made to load the food items into a truck and move them to a more secure location.
However, as the truck was moving towards Aroma junction at about 2pm, it was attacked and the items carted away.
Some of the youths who spoke on the condition of anonymity said it was unfair for the State Government to have diverted the food items meant for the poor masses who suffered most from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
“This is the height of wickedness. These were donations made by CACOVID in April this year and in October, the government is yet to distribute them. It is very obvious that these items were diverted and today, the people who they were meant for are taking them. I feel no remorse for this because the government is the greater criminal,” they said.
It would be recalled that following the video revealing the location of the items, Anambra State Government had in a statement claimed that the food items were for flood victims across parts of the state.
The statement said COVID-19 materials had been distributed across the various communities.
But a close look at some of the items including Cartons of noodles, showed clearly that they were donated by CACOVID, a private sector-led organization in Nigeria, established to assist the government in combating the Coronavirus disease in the country.
