70% of Nigerians living in fear due to banditry – Yusuf

Yunusa Yusuf, who leads the Kagarko Local Government Area Youths in Kaduna State, has expressed deep concern about the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, stating that approximately 70% of the population lives in constant fear.

During an interview on Channels TV, Yusuf shared his personal experiences and efforts in contributing funds for ransom payments to secure the release of community members who had been kidnapped.

He emphasized the audacious demands made by the bandits involved in these incidents.

Yusuf criticized the existing security response, describing it as “shameful” and lacking in technological advancements.

He voiced his frustration, stating, “Security issues have almost consumed everybody in this country—about 70% of Nigerians are living in fear, and I think somebody will help me confirm that.”

As a young man from Kagarko Local Government, he detailed instances where he had personally contributed money to facilitate the rescue of community members held by kidnappers.

The bandits, according to Yusuf, would make brazen demands, including the requisition of bikes and Bajaj, which amounts to around a million naira, as well as food supplies.

He further highlighted the alarming situation where kidnappers would even serve the community advance notice through letters.

Yusuf expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of security in the country, particularly criticizing the lack of technological sophistication. He asserted, “The technological approach towards security is shameful.

We cannot continue practicing what we are practicing in this country in this way.” He raised concerns about the visibility of security forces and the subsequent vulnerability of communities to attacks by kidnappers who operate with impunity.

He recounted instances where kidnappers took control of entire communities, surrounding them without any intervention from the military or security agencies.

According to Yusuf, these criminals have effectively assumed the role of security agencies in certain areas, leading to a sense of shame and frustration about the state of affairs in the country.
