In a tragic incident that has shaken the community, Rashidat Shittu, a final-year student at Kwara State University, Malete, has been reported to have taken her own life.

According to initial reports, her decision was influenced by deep-seated concerns regarding her academic performance and standing within the university.

This heartbreaking occurrence serves as a stark reminder of the immense pressures and challenges that students often face, particularly in their final year of studies.

Rashidat’s untimely demise underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and support surrounding mental health issues among students, as well as the importance of fostering a nurturing and inclusive academic environment where students feel empowered to seek help and support when needed.

The university community, as well as society at large, must come together to address the systemic issues that contribute to such tragic outcomes and work towards creating a more compassionate and supportive educational system for all students.

It’s said she drank a substance called “sniper” before her upcoming exams. Unfortunately, she didn’t survive and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

Initially, she was taken to the school clinic but was then transferred to UITH. A staff member who helped at UITH mentioned that she arrived already deceased.

According to sources, Rashidat had been struggling with academic issues, which she confided in her friends about.

When she began experiencing pain, she informed them that she had consumed sniper. Witnesses observed her burial at a Muslim cemetery in Osere, Ilorin, where family members and university staff from the student affairs unit laid her to rest.

When reached for comment, the KWASU Director of University Relations, Mrs. Saeedat Aliyu, stated that she hadn’t been able to contact the relevant officers but promised to provide updates once she did.
